GiroStor · Flywheel energy demonstrator

Turning technical uncertainty into working proof

GiroStor came to us with an early flywheel energy-storage concept, a basic Excel model and a simple presentation. We developed the calculations and built a working benchtop demonstrator for investor meetings.

The challengeMore than a spreadsheet

The starting point

A concept that needed credible, physical proof

The initial calculation sheet was useful for exploring the idea, but it needed greater functionality and detail. GiroStor also needed a demonstrator that could make the technology easier to understand during investor conversations.

A flywheel demonstrator introduces a clear physical risk: a rotating heavy mass. The job was not simply to make something move. The calculation model, mechanical system, controls and user interface had to tell one coherent technical story, with safety considered from the outset.

01

Calculation confidence

Review the original model and reduce the risk of presenting overly optimistic results.

02

Physical integration

Bring mechanics, electronics, controls and the interface together in one working demonstrator.

03

Safety by design

Manage the rotating mass through practical design decisions and a defined control layer.

Connected development

Resolve the important questions early

We treated the spreadsheet and the demonstrator as complementary parts of the same project: one helped explore and explain the expected behaviour; the other made the concept tangible.

01

Define

We reviewed the existing Excel model, checked the underlying assumptions and identified where more detail and functionality were needed.

02

Prove

We developed the calculation tool and selected a benchtop approach that allowed the rotational speed to be reduced.

03

Build

We integrated the mechanical assembly, electronics, controls, professional safety relays and touchscreen live-data display.

The result

Useful evidence and something real to show

GiroStor received a more detailed, functional Excel calculation model and a working benchtop flywheel demonstrator for investor meetings.

The calculation work provided a stronger basis for discussing the concept. The physical build gave the team a tangible way to explain how the system operated, supported by live output and graphs rather than a presentation alone.

  • Developed Excel calculation model
  • Working benchtop demonstrator
  • Mechanical assembly and rotating mass
  • Electronics and controls integration
  • Professional safety relays
  • Touchscreen with live output and graphs

Client testimonial

“Twocan Ltd has been an outstanding partner for GiroStor. They initially supported us by developing sophisticated Excel models that became an important part of our investor presentations, delivering work of exceptional quality and helping us communicate our technology with confidence.

Following that success, we engaged them to design and build a desktop-scale flywheel demonstrator. Once again, they exceeded our expectations. Their combination of technical expertise, creativity, and practical engineering ensured the project was delivered to a very high standard.

What sets Twocan Ltd apart is their proactive approach, clear communication, and genuine commitment to finding the best solution. They are a pleasure to work with, consistently delivering beyond what is expected.

I would recommend Twocan Ltd without reservation to any organisation looking for an innovative, capable, and dependable engineering partner. Without Twocan we wouldn't be here today”
